Block 4 to the end - important stage directions

Block 4-

·         The Baron enters from the hotel to the loan shark.  Payton puts the suitcases up. The baron looks in a mirror and combs his hair.

·         The loan shark’s scene is the way we have blocked it in the past. Kilroy turns to the audience and says “I can remember that I used to be champ and turns with baron’s next line.  Bum shouts – unreal echoing Baron.

·         Cassanova has been looking out over the audience at the unknown.  He turns, tiredly and Kilroy crosses to him.  The baron and street cleaners scream offstage.  There is hitting going on. Kilroy says excuse me to the noise. Cassanova crosses to the fountain. The baron’s argument intensifies. Cassanova shrugs as if it is usual.Kilroy crosses to the noise but is still on stage.  He backs out as streetcleaners enter toward Cassanova.

·         Gutman laughs loudly. Kilroy snatches a rock to throw an everyone laughs louder. Kilroy says his next lineDon’t look….. The streetcleaners take off the baron’s shoes and leave them by the well in a pile. Villagers are dazed. Music transition before block five.

·         Meeting of Kilroy and Cassanova.  The guard stands on the pylon sticking out of the Siete Mares. Casanova whistles until the guard walks off USL. The guard enters again after policeand Cassanova whistles until the guard moves on. C & K move apart and look innocent until the guard says keep moving and exits again.

·         Page 13. After Cassanova’s “that the way out,(La Madrecita enters USR and sits by the well DSR of the well).  Kilroy runs toward the apron almost like hitting a brick wall (toward the audience & THE WIND WHISPERS & WHISTLES), he falls on his bottom. Gutman enters between clock and 2 fold.  Cassanova whistles G until Gutman crosses to the hotel. Kilroy is sad as he picks himself up.

·         Block 6   Kilroy looks at the well.  He sees La Madrecita holding up bread.  He takes it and tries to thank her.  She is mumbling her chant and doesn’t acknowledge him.  Street people disappear and return after guards enter and exit.  They are afraid of Gutman and guards.  They say sleep…

·         Gutman comes out and says hey Joe, street people scramble and hide. Street people duck as Kilroy approaches them to be witnesses. After Gutman – you ….patsy, Kilroy tries to make friends with guard before he says Pongo Selo.

·         Street people come out one by one during the chase – hesitant at first, After grayhound depot, street people begin shouting, “Ole, toro, one at a time until they sway it together.

·         After nursie says, “Jimmied lock”  street people gain momentum. Before Kilroy says, “Mother of Jesus! Guards shoot their guns in the air as a warning.

·         After beating, both Kilroy and Esmerelda sob. This is before “Caught!”

·         Block 7Dreamer advances with La Madrecita as she tries to sell baubles. – rosary beads.

Cassanova whistles G until he is sue no one is around and says we’ll find some way…..Lord and Lady Mulligan enter at the beginning of block 7.  Be sure Mulligan tries to talk and she interrupts him constantly.

·         Start at top of page 14. Street people duck when Kilroy goes to them asking about being witnesses.

·         Street people after Where’s the greyhound station gather.  They shout Ole, Toro! Before Nursie shouts Esmeralda!

·         After jimmied the lock, street people are shouting encouragement. Ejecutar yankee,

o   no dejes que te atrapará, Rapido! Rapido!, golpe de la policía, tener cuidado; ten cuidado

o   Lord and Lady Mulligan come out and sit DSL.

·         Shots are fired as Kilroy climbs, sobbing for breath, and crying out – Mary…..Christian!

·         Caught! …Villagers hide when soldier hits Kilroy.  Nothing is heard except Kilroy’s hoarse panting and sobbing.

·         Block 7

·         Shanghaied – sobbed out

o   Dreamer sings.Madrecita holding up rosary beads

·         Cassanova – it has to be extinguished. He saunters around Kilroy whistling and checking for guards and Gutman.

·         C feels like he has stayed too long and is in danger.  Patience… courage

·         Lady M keeps interrupting and is dominant. Lord M shouts shutup at audience and tries to run off so he can be the hunchback. Lady M stays there.

·         Curdles Blood – hunchback somersaults

·         Blue radiance on stage when Camille enters. She is in a daze, confused.  She can’t understand why this is happening to her.  Cass is proud to be with her.  With his cane, he separates the panhandlers from her. When M is seated, C makes a mock bow to Lady Mulligan. This is before wine list.

·         M leans back after ….do for now. She listens to guitar with eyes closed.

·         You seem tired.

·         Now I have to pay…Jacques… guard hands M an envelope. She reads it and hands it to Cass before oh, Jacques, how…here?

·         Your vocabulary…..cape and cane.  M springs up knocking over a glass. Lady M says line.

·         Desperation – gutman looks at the villagers.

·         Block 8

·         Wind music & Flamingo cry. Gutman holds up a hand to silence wind and bird call.

·         G…guests – Abdullah ducks laughing, almost falling down. Gutman has a hard time stifling laughter.

·         M throws back head again with eyes closed. Wind again. Gutman motions for K to try ladder again. His nose blinks and Gutman laughs again.

·         Block 9

·         Abdullah runs to hotel with torch – flashlight. Sound of plane – Elijah . M has had eyes closed and she opens them startled. Gutman plays a heart beat on drums.Cass does drumbeats with his cane.

·         M grabs Abdullah’s flashlight and looks in the sky. Hotel guests cry.

·         Guests yell about the plane, visibly scared. People noises.  Gutman – why wasn’t I told…Marguerite is visibly stunned. Noise of plane – recording. Flashing lights.

·         Pilot speaks. M- everybody is…. Ongoing passengers stand in line. M butts in line. See page 21.

·         M – hotel safe… whistle Cass leaves. He returns with a bag of $.

·         PILOT – only pounds… she pounds her forehead with fists and throws money at pilot

·         Mulligans come in. P & O shriek as demons take their jewels.  M grabs pilots shoutlders.

·         Pilot – loan shark…

·         Whistle – P & O rush back over ladder.

·         Lady M ….raymond…

·         Mar – no – officer pulls her away as Cass appears with pounds he got at loan sharks.

·         Mar.. let him go… she turns savagely on Cass tears his coat open whistle and drums

·         Outgoing passengers sing…

·         I'm leaving on a jet plane

·         Cassanova – wait…loud wind.  She looks back. He stares at her fiercely striking with cane. Gutman bows to her. Jacques cane then randomly others hit things.  Read bottom of page 24.

·         Cass stands eyes closed toward audience.

·         Block 11

·         Gutman – fiesta…started

·         Blinding lights strike blows at Cass as he falls to his knees.  Crown is put on Cass’s head.

·         Cass s prings up and tries to hit everyone… throws off cape, cane and roars defiance and mocks himself

·         Cass – show me…..  Crowd roars, but he sobs and great lover

·         White light, music.  Everyone faces the light.  They freeze.

·         Kilroy crosses to Cass and exchange of crown/ etc.

·         K points out gloves and loan shark.  He indicates they will escape.  Cass shakes head sadly pointing to heart and hotel. Kilroy understands.  Guard approaches with soft shoe tap.

·         Cass whistles G. Kilroy acts nonchalant. Guard pics up wig and nose, looks suspiciously.  Kilroy runs for loan sharks – sliding in. crowd unfreezes, screaming about festival

·         . Gong sounds. Gutman shouts.  

·         Ole,, ole dance. Kilroy leaves pawn shop in disguise….(Put ladder DS) Everyone freezes. Speaks to Cass.  Exchange cross. Unfreeze.  E shouts Yankee

·         Bottom of page 27 – read.

·         Rose to K

·         Gypsy hits gong at same time. Gutman smokes in shadows

·         Cheering people take K offstage.

·         Block 12

·         Fountain dry – cant believe it.

·         Scream of E. nursie stands beside gypsy.

·         She shuffles cards.

·         Blanket and alarm clock

·         When gypsy returns with gun, she blows on it.

·         Gutman throws suitcase at Cass. Kilroy tries to pick it up and can’t.

·         Lonely – Marg runs to hotel no one answers.  La Madre and dreamer watc hing.

·         Marg reaches for his hand – K notices her for first time.

Everybody	Whisper words instead o so much whistling First dance needs to tell a story of graft, drugs, corruption, Sodom and Gomorrah The scene is slow when Jonah gets and puts on the Patsy uniform.  The energy is gone People noises before Hermano IF you are offstage, be sure no one can see you or hear you. Keening – starts softly as if we are not sure we hear anything then louder then soft again. Fugitivo scene- everyone louder – Can’t hear Amy’s funny line. React to Kylie asking for love. Crowd needs to be agitated. Show a contrast of being sad to happy about the fiesta announcement. When killing tucker, voices need to be varied from groans to screams – we need to hear hits, not stomp floor. Hold the staring at each other in block 6 so it will be more obvious If you have more than one character, make them all different. NO ONE except Quixote can see Kilroy after he dies. – no one can see the heart, etc.
Streetcleaners	Giggle creepy Be holding Tucker’s shoes and throw them in shoe pile.
Ashlynn	Fix rosary beads for Monday.
Brooke	Make your hand creepy at the beginning. Louder exiting the hotel Act like you are better than everyone else
Amy	Be louder, crazier and make your laugh older
Payton	You look like a teen ager in the loan shark scene.
Villagers	Act scared and like you have something to hide when guards are around. Villagers need to be creepier Villagers exit and enter from different places. When the villagers come in to sell Marguerite the flowers, one or two could go to the well to try to get water, but leave the water bucket there. Riley, put the sand bucket in when action is left stage.
Guards	Meaner faces.  Do they care about what happens to everyone? If not, do they laugh?
Jonah	Look at street cleaners when you say what have I gotten myself into?
Kadyn	Stumble into the scene as the survivor so that when you are shot, and you crawl, it will accentuate the pain of being shot.
Kylie	Exiting from the dance – try to get some guys. Loan shark and Rosita sound similar.
Mac	Block 13, walk in then become sad when you realize Kilroy is still there.
Stage lighting	Side light on Maky when she says come to the gypsy. Move one light to DSL so we can highlight Cassanova and Marguerite Lifting veil scene, the purple side light is not on either one of Kadyn and Jonah.
